Cupertino schools' API scores increase again
Town Crier Report

For the second year in a row, all Cupertino Union School District (CUSD) schools receiving an API score for 2003-2004 exceeded the state target of 800. Sixteen schools scored above 900 and one made the highest possible score, 1,000.

For the fifth consecutive year, the CUSD improved districtwide; it received a district API score of 919, 10 points higher than last year.

Faria Elementary School was one of only two schools in the state to score 1,000 points, the highest API score attainable. John Muir Elementary School gained 32 points, the greatest improvement in the district.

"I am very proud of every student, parent and teacher in the Cupertino Union School District for their hard work and dedication," said Superintendent William Bragg. "Our continued improvement is attributed to a collaborative effort which focuses on meeting the needs of all students."

CUSD receives the lowest revenue limit funding of the 32 school districts in Santa Clara County and is in the bottom 10 percent of funding statewide.

Despite its low revenue limit, CUSD has been able to maintain high academic achievement and is ranked the 16th highest-performing district in the state, said spokesperson Jeremy Nishihara.

CUSD is made up of 20 elementary schools and four middle schools. It serves more than 16,000 students representing 57 different languages in a 26-square mile area that includes Cupertino and portions of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Los Altos and Saratoga.
